Amherst, Mass. – The Geneseo women’s tennis team (15-4) dropped a 5-3 decision to New Jersey (16-2) in the opening round of the NCAA Championship Tournament. The Knights were making their fourth NCAA playoff appearance in the last five years.
The Knights fought back from a 3-0 deficit after doubles to win three of the first four singles bouts, cutting New Jersey’s lead to 4-3 before the Lions clinched the match with a straight-set win at second singles.
Sophomore Zakiyyah Abdus-Salaam (Mount Vernon/The Ursuline School) got Geneseo on the board with a straight-set win at sixth singles. She finished the season unbeaten in singles competition, going 16-0 (including a 13-0 mark at sixth singles) as part of her 25-2 overall record.
Senior Sarah Shields (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris) followed by winning in straight sets at the fifth singles spot. The win raised her season record to 15-2 (13-2 at fifth singles) and her overall mark to 28-7.
Sophomore Amanda Rosati (Albany/Academy of the Holy Names) won her team-leading 29th match by dispatching her fourth singles opponent in straight sets. Rosati finished the season 29-6 overall; her singles record was 15-1, including a 14-1 mark at fourth singles.
