GENESEO, N.Y. – Graduate student Alyssa Smith (Rochester/Brighton) of the Geneseo women’s track & field team has been named Atlantic Region Track Athlete of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Smith’s accomplishments this spring were highlighted by her first-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Penn Relays. She became the program’s first individual champion ever at that meet, recording the nation’s top time in the event (10:32.02). Smith is seeded second in the steeplechase at this weekend’s NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She’s also qualified for nationals in the 5,000-meter run, where she’s seeded 17th with a time of 17:08.17. Smith won that event at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championships, finishing more than 30 seconds ahead of the runner-up.
