GENESEO, N.Y. – The SUNY Geneseo field hockey team released its schedule for the upcoming 2013 season, Friday. Sixth-year head coach Jessica Seren and the Knights’ are slated to play six home dates throughout the fall, as well as six opponents that qualified for the NCAA Tournament a year ago.
“We are looking to make an impression right from the start as five of our first 10 opponents qualified for the NCAA Tournament last year,” said Seren, who lead Geneseo to its third-straight State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tournament in 2012. “With a core group of returners and a solid class of incoming players, we are excited to get back on the field, challenge ourselves and continue to compete at a very high level.”
The Knights will kick off the 17th season in program history against Salisbury in the first round of the Wilkes (Pa.) Tournament (Aug. 30) before taking on either the host Colonels or Union in day-two action (Aug. 31).
Geneseo will then play five of its next six games on the road, starting with three-straight away matches at Washington & Jefferson (Sept. 7), William Smith (Sept. 10) and St. Lawrence (Sept. 14).
Following the home opener against Utica (Sept. 18), the Knights will hit the road for back-to-back contests at defending SUNYAC Champion New Paltz (Sept. 27) and Oneonta (Sept. 28) to open league play.
October will get started with a home tilt against Morrisville (Oct. 1) as well as two more road games at Skidmore (Oct. 5) and Hamilton (Oct. 8). The Knights will then welcome four of its next five opponents to the friendly confines of Upper Alumni Field, including Oswego (Oct. 12), Houghton (Oct. 15) and Cortland (Oct. 19). After a quick trip north to finish the conference schedule at Brockport (Oct. 23), Geneseo will entertain Nazareth (Oct. 26) to close out the home portion of the regular season.
Seren will use trips to St. John Fisher (Oct. 30), NCAA quarterfinalist Rochester (Nov. 2) and Ithaca (Nov. 5) to prepare the squad for the SUNYAC Tournament that will be played on the home turf of the highest seeded team (Nov. 8-9).
Geneseo finished the 2012 season with a 12-6 record after falling to Cortland, 1-0, in the SUNYAC semifinals. The winningest coach in program history, Seren has guided the Knights to an average of 12 victories per season including the program’s first three SUNYAC Tournament appearances, since taking the reins in 2008.
