GENESEO, N.Y. – The SUNY Geneseo field hockey and ice hockey teams were named winners of the 2012-13 “Knights Challenge” as the final results of the department giving campaign were released today.
From Nov. 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013, each of the department’s programs were given the opportunity to mobilize the highest percentage of alumni to make a gift back to their respective teams funds. At the end of the challenge, the top-three men’s programs and the top-three women’s programs were all given an additional bump to their budgets.
The challenge was made possible through the generosity of Bob Avallone ’76 and Dan Loughran ’86, who donated the means to furnish the bonus funding for each of the qualifying programs.
The ice hockey team led the way on the men’s side as 50 percent of nearly 300 former players rallied to give back. The swimming & diving program finished runner-up with 26 percent of its alums making a donation, followed by the basketball squad at 21 percent.
For the women, 37 percent of nearly 100 field hockey alumnae were credited with making a gift, followed by swimming & diving (22%) and basketball (21%).
The two first-place programs each received a $7,000 supplement to their operating budget, while a second-place effort was worth an additional $5,500 and third place netted $4,500. In addition, the men’s soccer and women’s volleyball programs each earned $2,000 as any program able to engage a minimum of 15 percent of its alumni was rewarded.
Now, it is time to start making plans for the 2013-14 Knight’s Challenge. While the official launch will not be until the fall, any gift given today will count toward this coming year’s challenge so feel free to make your donation by clicking here.
