Festival Chorus, Symphony Orchestra to Perform Joint Holiday Concert Dec. 13

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo's Festival Chorus and Symphony Orchestra will feature two soloists during a joint holiday concert Dec. 13 at 3 p.m. in Wadsworth Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public.

The program features music from Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Ballet" and Poulenc's "Gloria" featuring soprano Pamela Kurau, visiting assistant professor of music at Geneseo. Also on the program is Vaughan Williams' "Fantasia on Christmas Carols" featuring bass-baritone J.J. Hudson, who is on the faculties of SUNY-Oswego and Nazareth College. Gerard Floriano, professor of music at Geneseo, directs the Festival Chorus. James Walker, distinguished service professor of music, will conduct the orchestra.

Kurau is a frequent soloist with many of the finest musical organization in upstate New York, including the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Rochester Oratorio Society and Chamber Music Rochester. Kurau's recent performances have included an evening of opera arias and chamber music with Chamber Music Rochester, a live broadcast of music of Gershwin and Porter on "Live from Hochstein," and a live broadcast with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra commemorating the victims and rescure workers of the September 11th tragedies. International performances have taken her to Germany, Austria, Finland, Japan, China and Korea. Kurau also teaches English lyric diction at the Eastman School of Music, where she earned her doctorate, and also serves on the faculty at the Hochstein School of Music in Rochester. She received a master's degree from the University of Missouri.

Hudson has performed more than 20 opera/lyric theater roles. He earned both his doctorate and a master's degree from Eastman. In addition, he holds a master's degree in voice performance from the University of Iowa. Prior to his appointment at SUNY-Oswego, he taught at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Concord University in West Virginia and Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

Hudson has performed with the Eastman Opera Theater, Rochester Opera Factory, Buffalo Opera Unlimited, Empire State Lyric Theater and the Tacoma (Wash.) Opera.
