Undergraduate Commencement May 17; Master’s Degree Ceremony May 10

GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo President Emeritus Christopher C. Dahl will deliver the keynote address for the college’s two undergraduate commencement ceremonies May 17 in the Ira S. Wilson Ice Arena on campus. Dahl will speak at both the 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. ceremonies, when he will address “Geneseo on the 20-Year Plan.” The college will confer an estimated 1,200 undergraduate degrees this year.

“It will seem unusual having Chris Dahl addressing commencement rather than presiding over it as he has for the past 18 years, but we are nonetheless delighted that he will be with us to deliver what I know will be a memorable speech for the Class of 2014,” said Carol S. Long, interim president of Geneseo. “Our graduates recognize that Chris has had a great deal to do with their success and with building Geneseo into the outstanding college it is today.”

Dahl, professor of English at Geneseo, is retiring in June after serving more than 18 years as Geneseo’s president during a period of unprecedented growth and recognition. He is the longest-serving president among SUNY’s four-year colleges. Dahl has been on leave since October but has continued to support the college to help assure a smooth transition to a new president. He has been involved in fundraising initiatives for the college in addition to working on special assignments for SUNY.

Dahl received his bachelor’s degree from Harvard College and both his master’s degree and doctorate from Yale University.  He has served as chair of the Board of Directors of the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) and currently is a member of the AAC&U’s Presidents’ Trust, a leadership group within the organization’s Liberal Education and America’s Promise (LEAP) initiative. He also served on the board of the American Council on Education and is past president of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC). He also served twice as president of the Rochester Area Colleges consortium.

During commencement, the college will confer two honorary doctorates: an honorary doctor of science degree upon Norman P. Neureiter, director of the Center for Science, Technology and Security Policy for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and an honorary doctor of laws degree upon Thomas L. Purce, president of The Evergreen State College and ardent advocate of public liberal arts education.

A member of the graduating class traditionally addresses fellow graduates at commencement and Sherry Leung, a history/adolescent education major from Fresh Meadow, N.Y., will address the morning ceremony. Mary Aldridge, a business administration major from Rochester, N.Y., will address the afternoon ceremony.

Geneseo graduate students will be recognized a week earlier during a master’s degree ceremony May 10 at 10 a.m. in Alice Austin Theater. Addressing the graduate ceremony will be 1991 Geneseo alumnus Christopher F. Liucci, chief accounting officer and global controller for Genesee & Wyoming Inc. His address is titled, “Pursuing Success.” An estimated 70 graduate students will receive degrees.

Liucci joined Genesee & Wyoming Inc. as chief accounting officer and global controller in 2006. He was previously director of global financial planning and reporting and controller of financial reporting/internal controls during more than eight years with Genencor International, Inc. Prior to that, Liucci was an audit manager with Coopers & Lybrand LLP (a predecessor to PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP), where he was an independent auditor for six years. Liucci is a CPA and earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1991 from SUNY Geneseo and an MBA from The Simon School of the University of Rochester. His wife, Paula, is also a 1991 Geneseo graduate.

Both ceremonies will be streamed live through this link. Visit the college’s commencement webpage for more information on the events.
