Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams Shine at NCAA National Championships

GENESEO, N.Y. -- The Geneseo men's and women's cross country teams fared well at the NCAA Division III championships Nov. 21 in Cleveland. The men placed a program-best sixth place with 271 points. The women lived up to their number nine national ranking by finishing ninth in team scoring with 320 points.

For the men, senior Bobby Henchen finished 39th in 26:13 and junior Ryan O'Connor finished 40th in 26:16. Other were sophomores Nick Pardee, who finished 83rd in 26:37; sophomore Chris Mateer, who finished 95th in 26:42; sophomore Lee Berube, the SUNYAC individual champion, who placed 106th in 26:47; senior Tim Chichester, who finished 123rd in 26:52; and senior Jesse Berube, who finished 126th at 26:53. The Knights are third in national rankings.

In the women's competition, senior Sandra Goettelman earned All-American honors with an 18th place finish in a time of 22:33. First-year Marissa Liberati placed 84th in 23:28 with graduate students Liz Montgomery and Maggie Morris placing 108th and 123rd in 223:41 and 23;47, respectively. First-year Brigid Heenan placed 143rd in 23:57 to complete the scoring five. Sophomore Alyssa Smith ran 144th in 23:58 and first-year Emily Sullivan ran 229th in 25:01.

Mike Woods, a 1969 Geneseo graduate, is in his 17th year of coaching both teams.
