GENESEO, N.Y. - Charles (Chip) Matthews, director of the college union and activities at SUNY Geneseo, has received the Region 2 Professional Service Award from the Association of College Unions International (ACUI). The honor goes to a student union/student activities professional who is a role model for peers and students and exemplifies the core values of the association. He received the honor during the fall regional conference in Ithaca Nov. 12-14.

"Chip Matthews brings a tremendous amount of energy and passion to his job and is most deserving of this honor," said Robert Bonfiglio, vice president for student and campus life at Geneseo. "His dedication to students and his colleagues is exemplary, and his impact is not only on the students he serves but also on the Geneseo community as a whole."

Matthews began his work at Geneseo in the Residence Life Department in 1998, was named assistant director of the college union in 2001 and rose to director in 2005. He has been responsible for numerous student-centered programs and activities including development and implementation of Geneseo Late Knight, an array of social alternatives for students on Friday and Saturday nights; the Knight Spot, a non-alcoholic on-campus dance club; and MOSAIC (Multicultural Organizational Space for Activities, Inclusion and Collaboration), a unique space and resource room for Geneseo's thriving multicultural student organizations.

Matthews also played an integral role in the development and implementation of the "Stand Up for One Another" program, which was recently recognized as the Collaborative Program of the Year by ACUI and as a 2010 SUNY Outstanding Student Affairs Program. In 2009, he received a SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Professional Services.

Matthews received a bachelor's degree in business management from Roberts Wesleyan College and a master's degree in public administration from SUNY Brockport.
