U.S. News & World Report: Geneseo Tops ‘Up-and-Coming,' 'Best Undergraduate Teaching' Lists for Regional Universities in North

GENESEO, N.Y. - U.S. News & World Report magazine has ranked The State University of New York at Geneseo as the top "Up-and-Coming" and "Best Undergraduate Teaching" regional university in the north in the publication's 2012 best colleges guidebook. The college also ranked second in the "Best Public Schools" category in the north and also jumped four places - from 12th to tied for 8th - in the general northern regional university rankings. U.S. News defines a regional university as one that offers a full range of majors and master's programs but few, if any, doctoral programs.

"The rankings continue to validate Geneseo's strong academic and student life programs," said Bill Caren, associate vice president for enrollment management at Geneseo. "We continue to attract very strong students primarily because of our faculty's strong commitment to undergraduate education."

The "Up-and-Coming" colleges and universities in the country were selected from data collected in a spring 2011 survey of college administrators who were asked to nominate institutions that they think have made the most promising innovative changes in the areas of academics, faculty, student life, campus or facilities and that have a commitment to undergraduate teaching.

In the general northern regional university rankings, Geneseo was one of two public colleges ranked in the top 20.

Geneseo also is featured in the "Road Trip" section of the publication in which a reporter visits campus and provides an overview of the campus for prospective students.

"We always advise parents and students to use these rankings as just one of many tools when assessing quality," said Caren. "Nonetheless, we are pleased with the consistent strong showing Geneseo makes every year."

All of this year's rankings are available online and will be published in the 350-page 2012 edition of the Best Colleges guidebook, available at USNews.com and on newsstands September 20.
