Geneseo Healthy Campus Community Coalition Seeks Nominations for New Awards

GENESEO, N.Y. -- The Geneseo Healthy Campus Community Coalition is seeking nominations for two new awards in the organization's continuing effort to promote the responsible and safe use of alcohol in our community. The Spirit of Geneseo Award and the Responsible Community Citizen Award will recognize organizations and individuals who have distinguished themselves through their commitment to the aims of coalition.

The coalition comprises a group of more than 60 businesspersons, local and college officials, college students and local citizens focused on preventing underage and excessive drinking.

The Spirit of Geneseo Award will recognize an organization or individual who took a leadership role among community entities to collaborate on a project that has demonstrated a substantive long-term commitment to the ideals of the coalition by promoting the community welfare related to the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages.

The Responsible Community Citizens Award has been established to recognize an organization or individual who made an exemplary effort in the past year to make a positive difference in the Geneseo community by promoting positive personal choices and/or the responsible sale and use of alcoholic beverages in our community. Examples include educational programs, implementing a change initiative, alternative social events, bystander intervention programming, and role modeling responsible decision-making.

"These new awards will call attention to the exemplary efforts made by local community members and local business establishments to promote positive social behavior and positive business practices in Geneseo," said coalition Co-Chair Bob Bonfiglio, vice president for student and campus life at SUNY Geneseo. "Since 2003, the members of the Geneseo Healthy Campus Community Coalition have agreed upon a set of expectations related to the responsible sale and use of alcoholic beverages in our community, the ‘Geneseo Campus Community Compact' and sponsored training activities related to serving alcohol for over 200 employees of local businesses."

On the nominating committee are the Rev. Dr. Nancy Lowmaster, pastor, Geneseo Central Presbyterian Church; Cynthia Oswald, president, Livingston County Chamber of Commerce; and Craig Veley, assistant principal and director of athletics, Geneseo Central School. The group will review all of the nominations for the awards. The deadline for awards nominations is March 15, 2012.
