Geneseo Students Receive Major Scholarships, Awards

GENESEO, N.Y. -- Four SUNY Geneseo students have captured some of the most competitive grants or scholarships in the country with the recent presentation of two Fulbright Awards, a Goldwater Scholarship and a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship.

Graduating seniors Bridget Kelly, a geography major from Bayport, N.Y., and Connor Burgevin, an English and French double major  from Trumansburg, N.Y., are among four Geneseo students to win a prestigious Fulbright Award the past three years. Kelly and Burgevin both received English teaching assistantships to teach in Malaysia and Morocco, respectively, starting next fall. Both will be in the classroom in those countries to provide assistance to teachers of English to non-native English-speakers. They also will serve as cultural ambassadors for the United States.

About 1,500 U.S. students receive Fulbrights each year, awarded only to students who have completed their undergraduate work. The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international exchange program, designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and people of other countries.

Receiving a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is sophomore Julia Mizutani, an international relations major from Elizaville, N.Y., for study this summer in Uganda. The Gilman scholarship program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies abroad. Such study is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world. It’s the third year in a row that a Geneseo student has received a Gilman scholarship.

Announced earlier this semester was junior Carrie Levinn receiving a highly competitive national Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship for her achievement and potential in the field of chemistry. Levinn, from Averill Park, N.Y., received one of 271 scholarships that the Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation awarded to undergraduate sophomores and juniors from the United States for the 2013-14 academic year.
