Livingston CARES Continues Hurricane Relief Work

Junior Alyssa Stefanese is among Geneseo students returning to Staten Island with Livingston CARES Jan. 12 – 18 during the semester break to continue clean-up work for those hard hit by Hurricane Sandy. Her own family’s home on Staten Island was damaged in the 2012 storm and she chose to also help others in the area last year after determining her family was safe. Stefanese will join six others on the crew. A similar work group will be in Biloxi, Miss., during the same week on Livingston CARES’ 29th work trip for Hurricane Katrina relief work.

GENESEO, N.Y. – The college/community organization Livingston CARES is preparing for its 29th trip to the Biloxi/Gulfport, Miss., area and its second trip to New York City’s Staten Island to continue repairing damage caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

A group of 21 Geneseo students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members will be in Mississippi Jan. 12 – 18 to continue relief work the organization has been doing to repair homes and other structures damaged by Hurricane Katrina. A separate group of seven is going to Staten Island during the same week to repair damaged caused by Hurricane Sandy.

“It’s easy for people to forget about the long-term damage these horrendous storms have caused but a great number of people still need help and will continue to need it for a long time,” said Tom Matthews, associate dean of leadership and service at Geneseo.“Students and community members are eager to participate in this work and it’s a tremendous example of service-learning, an important component of a liberal arts education.”

Livingston CARES is a non-profit group of Geneseo students, faculty and community members dedicated to local and global humanitarian projects. After Hurricane Katrina, the Livingston County Board of Supervisors established a relationship with its counterpart in Harrison County, Mississippi, to assist with the relief and recovery efforts. SUNY Geneseo organized Livingston CARES through the Center for Community, which emphasizes the vital link between service and leadership.

The organization is planning additional works trips to Mississippi and Staten Island this spring. To inquire about opportunities, call 585-245-5857.
