We have updated the Photo Gallery to include a few photos from the Math Department's Senior Dinner.

In the four years, we have been able to raise over $1500 for Autism Speaks by giving students the opportunity to throw a pie in the face of their professors, coaches, and administrators. There are some pictures from the events in the Photo Gallery. Thanks to everyone who has helped with this wonderful event!
Gary Towsley, distinguished teaching professor of mathematics, is among the country's top undergraduate professors named in The Princeton Review's new guidebook "The Best 300 Professors." ![]()
"To be honest, I'm not surprised to hear about Gary's selection as one of the country's best," said Provost Carol Long. "His reputation as a consummate scholar is well-known on our campus, and I frequently hear from students about the impact he has on their learning, both inside and outside of the classroom."
In its profile of Towsley, The Princeton Review editors cited his "ability to account for the varying levels of skill and understanding in his classes by trying to challenge those who already understand the material, while simultaneously being patient and supportive with those who feel they are lost."

Several math majors participated in Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) programs across the country during the summer. These programs give students a chance to experience what mathematical research is like. Patrick Daniels and Kaitlyn Ferguson attended the REU at North Carolina State University. Jessica Guise represented us at the University of California at Santa Barbara. Emmy Petty went to Virginia Tech, and Wilson Cheung went to Penn State. To find out more information about REUs and hear about some of these students' experiences, join us at our PRISM meeting on Wednesday, October 3, at 5:30 in Fraser Study Area. You can also find more information at the NSF REU or AMS REU websites.
Rising senior Wilson Cheung attended the 2012 annual summer meeting of the Mathematical Association of America, Mathfest. At this meeting of 1,500 mathematicians in Madison, Wisconsin, Wilson presented his research titled "On uniform bounds for rational points on quadratic rational curves and thin sets" and was awarded a prize of $150 from Pi Mu Epsilon (PME), a national mathematics honors society, for the quality of his mathematics and presentation. His paper on the subject, co-authored with Dr. Rault, will appear soon in the Journal of Algebra and Number Theory Academia.
During the 2011-2012 academic year, senior Kirill Lazebnik spent a semester in the Math in Moscow program and senior Samuel Cohn spent a year in the Budapest Semesters in Mathematics program. In the fall of 2012, senior Wilson Cheung will be attending the Mathematics Advanced Study Semesters at Penn State University, while many of our math majors will be studying abroad in general study abroad programs. For more information on these programs, see Dr. Patrick Rault.

In the Fall of 2010, juniors Jeff Singer and Michael Cerchia, attended the Budapest Semesters in Mathematics program. In the Fall of 2011, senior Kirill Lazebnik is attending the Math in Moscow program. During the entire 2011-2012 academic year, senior Samuel Cohn will be attending the Budapest Semesters in Mathematics program. For more information on these programs, see Dr. Patrick Rault.
Two rising seniors, Jeff Singer and Kirill Lazebnik, attended the 2011 annual summer meeting of the Mathematical Association of America, Mathfest. At this meeting of 1,400 mathematicians in Lexington, Kentucky, Kirill presented their research on "Intersecting Hyperbolas and Ellipses."
