General Policies and Procedures

Department of Mathematics

2011-2012

  1. The by-laws of the Department, the College Handbook, and the Department Chair's Handbook provide general guidelines for the year's routine.

  2. The committee structure of the Mathematics Department shall continue functioning and the schedule of regular department meetings has been distributed.

  3. The teaching schedule of the Department and the Academic Calendar of the College provide the framework for each member's instructional obligation.

  4. Procedures for recommendations for promotions and renewal of appointments:

    1. The Department by-laws and the instructions of the Provost give the general guidelines to be followed.

    2. In order to implement these directives and eliminate any ambiguities in procedure the Departmental Committee recommends the following:

      1. The Chair of the Departmental Committee will solicit from each Department member those records that the candidate wishes considered in the departmental review process.

      2. The Chair of the Departmental Committee will make such records available to all members of the Department involved in the review process.

      3. The Chair of the Departmental Committee will forward to the Department Chair and the Tenured Faculty, the Committee's recommendation (Form H) and the Committee's vote on this recommendation.

      4. In order to provide the Provost with at least the two independent recommendations that she requests, the Tenured Faculty and the Department Chair will prepare Form H independently and forward these separately to the Provost.

      5. The Chair of the Departmental Committee will meet with the candidate to discuss the recommendation of the Tenured Faculty and provide the candidate a copy of the Tenured Faculty's Form H.

      6. The Chair of the Department will meet with the candidate to discuss the recommendation of the Chair and provide the candidate a copy of the Chair's Form H.

      7. At the end of the Review Process, all records solicited will be returned to the candidate.

  5. Departmental Student Representation: A Policy on Student Representation in the Department governance was passed by the Mathematics Faculty in Spring 1980. PRISM may designate as many as two student representatives to attend department meetings without voting privileges.
