CHW Film Series, Guerilla Midwife

Guerilla Midwife Ibu Robin Lim finds herself in the ring of fire, where the midwifery model of care is put to the test, at the epicenter of the turmoil following the December 2004 Tsunami.  In this culturally mesmorizing, heart-wrenching documentary, you will discover why we must reinvent our protocols for pregnancy and childbirth.  This is the burden and the gift of the Guerilla Midwife.

Weaving Who We Are highlights tapestries from several countries around the world including: Ecuador, Chile, Kashmir, Mexico, Iraq, India, Guatemala and more! Take a journey throuhj the tapestries that explore birth, coming of age, family and death. These tapestries allow each of us to connect and share the experiences with people from around the world.

As Lior approaches Bar Mitzvah, the Jewish coming of age ceremony, different characters provide a window into life spent "praying for Lior".  The movie poses difficult questions such as what is "disability" and who really talks to God?

The Ties that Bind: Weaving a Union

Representatives from the Ba'hai, Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Native American and LGBT communities will discuss how individuals from their particular affiliations express their commitment to one another. They will share the role of their family and the role of their community. Participants will have an opportunity to learn about different cultures, religions, rituals and traditions. Questions are encouraged in advance and can be emailed to Tracy Paradis at paradis@geneseo.edu. 

A Dinner Reading of "China Doll" with playwright, Majorie Chan

 5:30pm, Letchworth Dining Hall, upstairs

China Doll, the story of Su-Ling, a  rebellious young woman in Shanghai at the turn of the century of the 20th century. Raised by her grandmother, Poa-Poa, Su-Ling's tiny  and exquisitely bound feet mark her only real worth as a bride and as a woman. Her destiny seems clear until she meets the enigmatic Merchant Li who runs a fabric store and is trying to escape his past. He teaches the young Su-Ling to read and she is awakened to a world where her personal struggle is mirrored by an imperialist country on the brink of change.

The Knightspot is the place to be if you want to get down and learn some moves from popular Latin dances: salsa, bachata, and merengue. You'll also learn a little bit about the history of these dances and the special place they hold in Latino culture. You may even find that special someone to dance with!

Keynote Speaker-G.Peter Jemison

Film director G. Peter Jemison (Seneca) is the manager of Ganondagan State Historic Site, a recreation of a 17th-century Seneca village, located in Victor, New York. Jemison represents the Seneca Nation of Indians on repatriation issues; he serves on the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation and formerly served on the board of directors of the American Association of Museums. He is also an artist whose work has been widely shown for more than two decades. His paintings and drawings have shown in solo exhibitions at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo and at the Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, New York. He was the founding director of the American Indian Community House Gallery in New York City. Jemison received a BS in art education and an honorary doctorate in fine arts from Buffalo State College in Buffalo, New York.

IFS/CHW Film Series, The Funeral with Discussant:  Nicole M. Koschmann, Outreach Coordinator, East Asia Program, Cornell University

The funeral is a bleak but powerful film about the fate of sin. A film, about a place in the world where redemption is far gone.  Juzo's directorial debut that won five Japanese Academy Awards and international recognition.  Comic yet poignant portrayal of the conflicts faced by a family when their patriarch dies unexpectedly and they must make last-minute decisions about his funeral arrangements.

Everybody Loves Weddings!

Weddings are only one way we celebrate the union of individuals and their families. This year's Cultural Harmony Week event will showcase traditional foods shared over family unions.

New York City's Repertorio Espanol Presents its Award-Winning performance of "La gringa" Directed by Rene Buch, Written by Carmen Rivera

In Spanish. Simultaneous translation headsets at door; please bring picture I.D. to performance

Maria, a native New Yorker, travels to Puerto Rico for the first time in search of her roots. Excited about seeing her  "homeland" and a family she has never known, her over-enthusiam translates into peculiar and suspicious behavior to her Puerto Rican family. Tickets are available at the SA ticket office $2 for Geneseo students, and $10 general public, faculty/staff.
