  • Apply for admission to SUNY College at Geneseo following standard procedures established by the State University of New York (your High School guidance counselor can provide you with the necessary forms and instructions, or you can see the Geneseo admissions web page ).  This applies to all prospective students.
  • Decisions for admission to the College in one of those majors or minors will be based on high school academic records, results of college entrance examinations, and results of Department of Music auditions.

  • It is in your best interests to become familiar with the campuses and programs of all schools you are considering. On your campus trip, you can include visits to Theatre, Music, or Dance classes or productions, interviews in the Office of Admission and other departments of the College, and a campus tour.

Why do I need to apply?

  • The purposes of the interview/audition process are to assess whether your background is appropriate and sufficient for the program of study and to assess your potential to successfully complete the program.

Musical Theatre Major

Audition Requirements

  • Musical Theatre auditions for admission in Fall 2014 will be held Saturday, November 9, 2013, Saturday, February 1, 2014, Saturday, February 22, 2014 and Saturday March 8, 2014.
    • Reserve your audition spot by contacting Tammy Farrell at farrell@geneseo.edu or (585) 245-5824.
  • The singer must prepare two songs for the audition. These should each be no longer than 4 minutes in duration. There should be one up-tempo and one ballad, and one must be from musical theatre repertoire that is from a pre-1965 work. Because the vocal study for Geneseo musical theatre majors will always involve some classical repertoire, it is possible for one piece to be from the classical repertoire. This does not negate the pre-1965 musical theatre requirement. It is expected that the student will have clean copies of their songs from which our coach will accompany them, and that the music is bound in a notebook. This is preferable to original scores as the notebook stays open on the piano music stand. The songs should be memorized and demonstrate the singer's vocal technique and ability to communicate the text and character of the song. It is not necessary to stage the songs.
    • Geneseo will provide an accompanist
  • May be requested to sight read
  • Two memorized monologues (two to three minutes in length), one serious and one comic
    • No period requirement
  • Demonstration of proficiency in movement skills sufficient to successfully complete dance requirements
  • Résumé
