CALENDAR OF EVENTS FOR NOV. 11-17

THURSDAY, NOV. 11:

FILM: The Alan Lutkus International Film Series presents the film "Billy Elliot." If you have ever felt out of place then you will feel right at home with Billy Elliot, a working class boy secretly learning ballet while his out-of-work father thinks he’s paying for Billy to take boxing. This joyous film is a celebration to being yourself. The discussant is Robert Owens of the communicative disorders and sciences department. 7 p.m., Bailey Hall Auditorium (135). Free and open to the public.

LEDERER GALLERY EXHIBIT: The Bertha V.B. Lederer Gallery in Brodie Hall presents an exhibit by fabric artist Mary Ann Scarborough of Rochester and cibachrome photographer Mark Abrahamson of Seattle. The gallery is open daily from 2-4:30 p.m. and Thursdays 12-8 p.m. Free and open to the public. The exhibit runs through Friday, Dec. 3.

LOCKHART GALLERY EXHIBIT: The Lockhart Gallery at McClellan House presents "Embracing Eatonville." This exhibition is being organized by internationally renowned photographer Carrie Mae Weems and features her work, as well as that of acclaimed photographers Dawoud Bey, Lonnie Graham and Deborah Willis. The show is conceived of as a photographic survey of the people and history of Eatonville, Fla., the nation’s first incorporated African-American town and the home of celebrated Harlem Renaissance author Zora Neale Hurston. The four photographers respond to the town and its residents in diverse ways, ranging from Bey’s straightforward, almost anthropological portraits to Weems’s more poetic, evocatively personal meditations. The gallery is open daily from 2-5 p.m. and Thursdays 12-8 p.m. Free and open to the public. The exhibit runs through Friday, Dec. 10.

MUSICAL: The School of Performing Arts presents the musical "Kiss Me Kate." Directed and choreographed by Melanie Blood. Musical direction by Jack Johnston. 8 p.m., Alice Austin Theatre, Brodie Hall.
