FILM SERIES: The Alan Lutkus International Film Series will
present "Mondays in the Sun" at 7 p.m. in 204 Newton Hall. Starring the Academy
Award nominated actor Javier Bardem, this film examines the larger issue of a
globalize labor market by focusing on a small group of workers forced out of
their jobs in a shipyard. The
director has a whimsical take on the issue, but he makes the point of showing
how these potentially productive men have been cut off from their previously
active lives. Spain's right-wing government is pointedly made the target of the
blame and crestfallen Joe embodies all that is lost when a nation's workforce
is sacrificed. The film is free and open to the public. Discussant: David
Tamarin, Associate Professor of History.
(Spanish with English subtitles, 113 min.)
