Gloria Lopez of Webster, N.Y., Named
Associate Director of Human Resources and
Director of Affirmative Action for SUNY Geneseo

GENESEO, N.Y.—The State University of New York at Geneseo has appointed Gloria Lopez of Webster, N.Y., associate director of human resources and director of affirmative action, concluding a national search.

In her new position, Lopez will work with the human resources department to further diversify the faculty and staff at Geneseo. "When I say diversity, I do not mean only race and gender, but also socio-economic, cultural and disability diversity," said Lopez. "Students at Geneseo receive an excellent education.  By diversifying our workforce and students, we will help to prepare our students to be the leaders in the multicultural environment in which they will work after graduating from Geneseo."

Lopez will bring with her a vast amount of experience in human resource management and affirmative action, said Geneseo Vice President for Finance and Administration Ken Levison.

"We are extremely fortunate to have a professional with the depth of experience that Gloria Lopez brings to Geneseo," said Levison. "She is a consummate professional, who has worked effectively in all aspects of human resources. In addition, she has a deep commitment to affirmative action and diversity, which will serve us well as we continue our efforts to diversify the college's faculty and staff."

Lopez has served as a deputy county attorney for Monroe County; litigation attorney for Gallo & Iacovangelo in Rochester, N.Y.; and most recently as the in-house counsel, director of human resources and affirmative action and privacy officer for the Urban League of Rochester.

In addition, she served as a civil administrative hearing examiner for the Parking Code and Municipal Violation Bureau for the City of Rochester, where she adjudicated claims involving housing, municipal code and parking violations. She is a certified mediator and a mediator for the Center for Dispute Settlement. She is a member of the Society of Human Resources, the Monroe County Bar Association and the Volunteer Legal Service Project.  Lopez also has served on the New York State Advisory Committee to the United States Commission on Civil Rights. The committee members assist the commission with its fact-finding, investigative and information dissemination functions.

"As a Belizean immigrant, I have benefited from my exposure to diversity. I developed the skills necessary to build consensus with individuals from a diverse background. These skills are essential in working in an environment that is reflective of our global society," says Lopez. "I would like to ensure that students at Geneseo are exposed to and benefit from as much diversity as possible. I believe we can become absolutely terrific when we learn from the diverse people around us."

Lopez earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Rochester and jurist doctorate degree from the University of Buffalo Law School.
