School of the
Arts Dean Jonathan Gonder is Guest Pianist for Tremont Quartet Concert GENESEO,
N.Y. – The dean of SUNY Geneseo’s School of the Arts, Jonathan Gonder, will be
guest pianist at the Tremont String Quartet’s concert Nov. 13 in Wadsworth
Auditorium. The concert begins at 8 p.m.
and is free and open to the public. Gonder,
professor of music, will join the acclaimed in-residence ensemble in the
performance of Brahms’ “Quintet for Piano and Strings, Opus 34,” written in
1864. The quartet also will perform
Mozart’s “String Quartet in G Major,” written in 1782. “The
Tremont first collaborated with Dean Gonder in the fall of 2008 for a performance
of the third movement scherzo from the Brahms work at the college’s annual
Kaleidoscope Concert,” said James Kirkwood, Tremont cellist and director of the
quartet. “The success of that
performance led to plans to perform the entire quintet this season.” Gonder
was named the college’s first dean of the School of the Arts shortly before the
Kaleidoscope performance in the summer of 2008. He received his doctorate of
musical arts in piano performance at the University of Michigan, where he
studied with renowned pianist Gyorgy Sandor.
He has received numerous awards and prizes in his career while
participating in international, national, provincial and regional music
competitions. The
Mozart quartet is the first of the cycle of six quartets that Mozart dedicated
to Haydn, which stand as highlights of the classical cycle. In
addition to James Kirkwood, the Tremont includes Richard Balkin and Laura Mahan
Balkin (violins) and Linda Kirkwood (viola). The group tours with support of
grants from the New York State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment
for the Arts. The ensemble has distinguished itself with critically
acclaimed performances of standard and contemporary American repertory
throughout North America and has numerous recordings to its credit. |
