New York State Senator Dale M. Volker secures $125,000
for SUNY Geneseo's Lockhart Gallery
GENESEO, N.Y.—The State University of New York at
Geneseo will better preserve and expand its art collection thanks to New York
State Sen. Dale Volker, who secured a $125,000 grant for the Lockhart Gallery.
Volker (R-I-C, Depew) presented a check today to Geneseo
President Christopher C. Dahl at a press conference in the Main Street gallery.
The grant will allow the gallery to strengthen its capacity to house and
exhibit the Geneseo art collection and to encourage the donations and loans of
additional pieces.
"The State University of New York at Geneseo is one of the
finest colleges in the nation," said Volker. "These are exciting times for the
college and Livingston County, and it is my sincere honor to be of assistance
in securing state funds to protect, preserve and expand the Lockhart Gallery
for all to enjoy."
Dahl underlined the importance of the gallery and confirmed
that the funds will allow the college to conserve and preserve its arts
collection for the public to enjoy.
"The Lockhart Gallery is an important college and community
resource and contributes to the cultural vitality of Livingston County," said
Dahl. "With this generous grant from one of our strongest supporters, Senator
Volker, Geneseo will be able to expand its collections knowing we have the
proper storage environment to house delicate pieces of artwork."
The Lockhart Gallery opened in 2001 along with the college's
Collins Alumni Center in the McClellan House at 26 Main Street. The Geneseo
Foundation, which has the responsibility for the college's art collection,
considers the Lockhart Gallery and the McClellan House as one of the most
important bridges between the college and Livingston County community.
The Lockhart Gallery has become a cultural center for
Geneseo and the surrounding region, mounting works by artists from around the
country and the local area, including former Livingston County Court Judge
Gerald "Jerry" Alonzo's impressive wood sculpture exhibit. Exhibits are free,
and the gallery is open Mondays through Saturdays during the academic year. In
addition, several regional arts organizations use the gallery for special
exhibits.
The Lockhart Gallery opens its 2006-07 year with an exhibit
titled "The Women of Geneseo (Town and Gown in the Era of Susan B. Anthony)"
opening reception from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28. The exhibit runs through
Oct. 27. "The Art of Science" will run Nov. 7 through Dec. 12 to coincide with
the opening celebration of the college's Integrated Science Center.
