SUNY Geneseo to Celebrate 10th
Anniversary of its
Xerox Center for Multicultural Teacher Education
GENESEO, N.Y.—The Xerox Center for Multicultural
Teacher Education at the State University of New York at Geneseo will celebrate
a decade of working for social justice through education with a 10th
anniversary celebration Oct. 13-14.
The center—housed in Geneseo's Ella Cline Shear School
of Education—strives to promote the academic success of students from all
ethnic and cultural communities, especially those who have been historically
less well-served by public schools. The center's staff works to ensure that the
college's education majors are trained to teach diverse students populations.
The center offers weekly seminars, tutoring and mentoring partnerships with the
Rochester City School District and scholarships for underrepresented education
majors.
On Oct. 13, the center will host a dinner for guests who
have been involved with the center throughout the past decade.
The celebration also will include a daylong conference
Saturday, Oct. 14 in the MacVittie Union Ballroom. The conference is free and

The conference registration with coffee will be from
8:30-9:15 a.m. Geneseo Provost Katherine Conway-Turner will open the conference
with a welcome.
The keynote address will go from 9:20-10:15 a.m. The keynote
speaker is Joseph Kincheloe, professor in McGill University's Department of
Integrated Studies in Education. Kincheloe is the author of numerous books and
articles about pedagogy, cultural studies, education and social justice,
racism, class bias and sexism, issues of cognition and cultural context and
education reform.
A workshop called Race, Class, Gender, Disability in
Education will be held 10:30-11:30 a.m. Panelists include David Hursh,
associate professor in the University of Rochester's Warner School of
Education; Elaine Cleeton, associate professor of sociology at Geneseo; and
student presenters from Geneseo and the UR.
A workshop called Professors and Teachers Leading Change
will run from 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Panelists include Jane Fowler Morse,
professor of education at Geneseo; Sharon Peck, assistant professor of education
at Geneseo; and Greg Dimitriadis, associate professor of educational leadership
and policy at the University of Buffalo.
The luncheon speaker at 1 p.m. will be Jana Carlisle, chief
planning officer for the Rochester City School District and William A. Johnson
Jr., former mayor of Rochester and distinguished professor of public policy at
the Rochester Institute of Technology.
The last workshop of the day will be held from 2:15-3:15
p.m. The panel will include partners with the Rochester City School District.
At 3:15 p.m., School of Education Dean Osman Alawiye will
make closing remarks.
