Aidan Fullerton, a senior geophysics major from Yorktown, N.Y., is “Mad Padraic” in GENtrai’s production of “The Lieutenant of Inishmore” March 3-5.

GENESEO, N.Y. -- GENtraí, Geneseo’s Irish-American theater ensemble, presents “The Lieutenant of Inishmore” March 3 – 5 in the Robert E. Sinclair Black Box Theatre.

The darkly funny work by playwright Martin McDonagh is set in 1993 off the western coast of Ireland. It is directed by graduating Senior Dennis Caughlin (who also designed the set and costumes) in partial fulfillment of his senior honors capstone.

Donny (Michael Vecchio), a middle-aged Irishman whose best friend Davey (Noah Mazer) is a 17-year-old hippie with a heart of gold. Davey has just found a dead cat in the road, and it turns out the cat, Wee Thomas, belonged to Donny’s son “Mad Padraic” (Aidan Fullerton).  Padraic has been fighting for the Irish republican movement in Northern Ireland for the past five years, but he’ll be back in time for your visit also… just pray you didn’t have anything to do with the passing of Wee Thomas.

And that’s only the half of it! You’ll fall in love with Mairead (Lea Pandoliano), Davey’s gun-toting tomboy sister; your heart strings will tug when you meet James (Chase Watkins) and you’ll be ready to join the fight after hearing the stories of Joey (Sam Longbotham), Christy (Ben Kutina), and Brendan (Benjamin Geiger).  The Narrator (Paige Gordon) will make sure you don’t miss any of the exciting details on your travels.

The production opens March 3 at 7:30 p.m. with shows March 4 at 7:30 p.m., and March 5 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Senior Sarah Booker serves as stage manager, assisted by junior Emily Bantelman. Junior Courtney Cavalla is light designer; junior Noah Pfeiffer is sound designer; and junior Brodie McPherson is designing hair, makeup, and props.  Professor Johnnie Ferrell of the Department of Theatre and Dance is the technical director; Professor Randy Barbara Kaplan, also of the Department of Theatre and Dance, is directing mentor and producer.

Tickets ($10 open seating) are available from the College Union Box Office (585-245-5873) and the Brodie Box Office (585-245-5833) or online at bbo.geneseo.edu.  Seating is limited to 130 seats per performance, so don’t wait!
