Suny Geneseo Campus

Nicole Bergamo from Liverpool, N.Y., is among those performing in the SUNY Geneseo Dance Ensemble concert Dec. 10 – 13.

GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo’s Dance Ensemble will feature a wide array of student works during its “48Live: Dancing on the Edge” performance Dec. 10 - 13 in the Alice Austin Theatre. The Thursday through Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m. The Sunday matinee begins at 2 o’clock. Tickets are available for $10 through the Student Association Ticket office or online.

Artistically directed and produced by Professor of Dance Jonette Lancos, the performance features a variety of works from innovative student choreographers in the Dance Studies program.

There will be six pieces choreographed by individual seniors at Geneseo. Alyssa Willmarth will showcase her tap work “The Worrying Animal,” inspired by a Lewis Thomas quote expressing humankind’s tendency to “worry away our lives, fearing the future, discontent with the present … unable to sit still.”

Katarina Bojanowski’s modern piece, “Perpetual Light,” also draws inspiration from a quote––in this case, “The Old Astronomer.” The poem features the line, “Though my soul may set in darkness, it will rise in perfect light. Two other modern pieces are featured from choreographers Kristen Czerwinski and Antonia Marc. Czerwinski’s “From the Beginning” will explore the concept of human evolution, and Marc’s “Lotus” centers on the existential struggle of humans to find both courage and happiness in their lives.

Rachel Winter’s contemporary ballet piece, “Ruse,” strives to convey the multi-faceted nature of women; highlighting their confidence, demureness and sass.

Nicole Bergamo will end the show with her up-tempo jazz work, “Serendipity.” The piece focuses on the joy that one finds through unexpected friendships and new experiences.

In addition, Dance Composition students will present their final projects focusing on elements of design––line, shape, size, value, color, texture––and the principles of design: balance, dominance, gradation, harmony, repetition and variation. Seniors Meaghan Trevett and Molly Kindler will showcase projects, as well as juniors Brynn Davie, Laura Dolan and Sophia Garber.

Assistant Professor of Theatre and Dance Mark Broomfield, assisted Lancos in the production of the show. In addition to choreographing their own works, Bergamo and Czerwinski worked as student assistants for the production.

Behind the scenes, junior Courtney Cavallo and Adam Brown will stage manage the production. Under the mentoring of both Technical Director Johnnie Ferrell, associate professor of theater, and Theatre and Dance Department Chair Steven Stubblefield, student lighting designers will create unique and distinct atmospheres for the pieces. Theatre and Dance Department Lecturer Bonita Stubblefield also mentored students in costume design.
