Nov. 3, 2010: Geneseo Ranks Highly on SCA Internship Participation List

SUNY Geneseo was ninth in the nation for the number of current students and recent alumni participating in Student Conservation Association (SCA) internships for the 2009-10 school year.

Fifteen from Geneseo were involved in SCA internships ranging from trail maintenance in Virginia's Jefferson National Forest to preserving and cataloging historic archive collections of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in California. Geneseo joins much larger schools on the top-10 list, such as the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Clemson, Michigan State University and the University of Florida.

The SCA connects young people to the natural world by engaging them in hands-on service to the land, helping them to interpret and protect the country's vital natural, historical and cultural resource treasures.

Sept. 13, 2010: Geneseo Among ‘Most Desirable Rural Schools'in Kaplan/Newsweek Rankings

Geneseo is ranked #21 on the Kaplan/Newsweek list of the 25 "Most Desirable Rural Schools" in the United States. It is the first year that rankings have been part of the Kaplan/Newsweek "Finding the Right College for You" guide.

The publication highlights 25 schools in 12 categories to assist prospective students and their parents in college decision-making. Geneseo joins schools such as Dartmouth College, Amherst College and Clemson University in the rural school category. The publication based rankings in the category on the same criteria as the 25 "Most Desirable Schools in America" category and then adjusted the ranking to include only schools in rural areas.

Newsweek and Kaplan, an educational and career services provider best known for its test prep programs, are subsidiaries of The Washington Post Co.

Aug. 22, 2010:  Geneseo on Parade Magazine's ‘A-List' of Colleges

Parade magazine, a Sunday supplement distributed by numerous newspapers across the country, has placed Geneseo on its "A-List" of 20 small public schools in the nation.

The Aug. 22 issue contains "A-List" schools across the country, based on recommendations from top high school counselors. Geneseo's inclusion was based on responses from 43 counselors.

The article notes that schools in Geneseo's category "combine the communal feel of a small liberal-arts college with the breadth of choice offered by a big university," and asserts that "this may be one of the very best public institutions for teaching and learning in the nation. Geneseo kids are plenty smart and want to learn."

Aug. 23, 2010:  College Ranks Seventh in Washington Monthly Magazine Rankings

Geneseo is ranked 7th overall in the nation among 551 "master's universities" in Washington Monthly magazine's 2010 college rankings. The college is the only public school among the first 18 on the list.

The magazine ranks the schools based on their contribution to the public good in three broad categories: social mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students); research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and doctoral degrees); and service (encouraging students to give something back to their country).

Geneseo has a particularly strong foundation to support the service category. For example, Washington Monthly ranks Geneseo 11th among the 551 schools in the number of alumni who go on to serve in the Peace Corps, relative to school size, one of the metrics in the category. Between 2001-09, 116 Geneseo graduates have served in that service organization.

In addition, Geneseo has been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. Colleges earn a position on the honor through their impact on issues from poverty and homelessness to environmental justice. Geneseo has been on the honor roll every year since the recognition was launched in 2006.

Geneseo also ranked 11th in the research category for the number of its graduates who go on to receive doctorates, relative to school size.

Washington Monthly's "master's universities" category includes schools that offer comprehensive undergraduate programs, some master's programs but few doctoral programs.

Complete rankings are in the September-October issue of Washington Monthly.
