GENESEO, N.Y. –– The Department of Theatre and Dance will present its first main stage production of the 2015-2016 season, Tina Howe’s “The Art of Dining,” from Nov. 11–15 in Brodie Hall’s Alice Austin Theatre.
Directed by Professor Randy Barbara Kaplan, the heartfelt comedy explores the interesting ways that individuals use eating not only as a means of nourishment, but as a means to satisfy both internal and external emotional goals like comfort and seduction.
Through humor and poignant insight, the play fosters connections between its characters and the audience members. The plot revolves around Cal, played by junior Joshua Shabshis, and his wife and expert chef Ellen, played by freshman Courtney King. The two have sold all of their possessions in order to open their own restaurant, The Golden Carousel, in their home.
As the two struggle to keep their new business afloat, a wacky amalgamation of diners are introduced: fine dining addicts Hannah and Paul Galt, played by sophomore Kimberly Romano and freshman Richard Taylor James; the excruciatingly shy author Elizabeth Barrow Colt, played by sophomore Rachel Britton, and her rookie publisher David Osslow, played by sophomore Brendan Mahoney.
The trio of Tony Stassio, Nessa Vox and Herrick Simmons––played by junior Channing Porter, sophomore Jenna Lawson and junior Mallika Shah respectively––are also instrumental in the play; showing off the complex relationships that form between individuals, themselves and food in every way from self-congratulatory to self-hatred.
In order to enhance the realism in the performance, Theatre and Dance Department Chair Steven Stubblefield designed an intricate set that features a full kitchen. Associate Professor of Theatre Johnnie Ferrell’s lighting and sound expertise also lends itself to truly immersing the audience in the play. Theatre and Dance Department Lecturer Bonita Stubblefield was in charge of costume and makeup.
Students also contribute behind the scenes, with junior Michelle Cooman working as stage manager and supported by assistant stage managers, sophomores Julia J. Cameron and Nina Mor.
Kaplan noted that the cast and crew have been in rehearsal for the production since Sept. 12, showing the incontestable commitment and passion that each member has for their work in “The Art of Dining.”
With such preparation and dedication from truly talented students and faculty, “The Art of Dining” is sure to be a compelling and memorable theatrical event.

“The Art of Dining” will be performed from Nov. 11–14 at 7:30 p.m. and on Nov. 15 at 2 p.m.
