Department of Communication faculty member Mike Saffran works with high-school and junior-high-school students on campus this week to hone their journalism skills during the first 4-H Teen Press Corps, organized by 2012 Geneseo alumnus Nate Smith.

GENESEO, N.Y. -- High-school and junior-high-school students from Wyoming County visited SUNY Geneseo Thursday for the first 4-H Teen Press Corps, sponsored by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Wyoming County and Geneseo’s Department of Communication.

Students were taught newswriting and interviewing skills — along with how to recognize and create newsworthy stories — by Mike Saffran from Geneseo’s communication department.

The workshop was organized by 2012 Geneseo alumnus Nate Smith, a community educator with the 4-H Youth Development Program of the Cooperative Extension of Wyoming County.

Smith called the inaugural Teen Press Corps a great start in helping prepare students for real-world newswriting experiences — as they will be covering news and writing stories about this year’s Wyoming County Fair, in August, in the Town of Pike.

Student stories about the county fair will be used online and in a cooperative-extension newsletter.
