GENESEO, N.Y. -- SUNY Geneseo is remembering the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with its fourth annual "Day of Leadership and Service" program Jan. 20, the 28th anniversary of the federal holiday commemorating the life of the civil rights leader. Students, faculty and staff will have the opportunity to hear a keynote address by a Geneseo distinguished teaching professor emeritus of history, participate in afternoon service projects and attend leadership workshops through the college's highly regarded GOLD program (Geneseo Opportunities for Leadership Development).

William Cook, distinguished teaching professor emeritus of history at Geneseo, will deliver the program's keynote address, "What Would MLK Jr. Do? Translating His Life for Action in the 21st Century," at 10 a.m. in MacVittie College Union Ballroom. His address is free and open to the public. That will be followed by five GOLD workshops and intergenerational service projects to assist home-bound senior citizens in Livingston County but registration is required. Visit the GOLD website for more details.

Geneseo will continue its MLK commemoration April 21 with the annual King Commemoration Lecture. As the country approaches the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Mississippi Freedom Summer, Geneseo will be hosting a panel of Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) activists Dorie Ladner, Charlie Cobb and Charles McLaurin, focusing on the Mississippi movement. All three were involved in SNCC's very early voter registration work that helped lay the groundwork for the 1964 Freedom Summer Project. They will speak at 7:30 p.m. in the MacVittie Union Ballroom.
