GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo is among 44 “Best Buy Schools” in the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom, named in the 2015 edition of “The Fiske Guide to Colleges.” Inclusion on the list in the highly respected publication is based on the quality of academic offerings in relation to the cost of attendance.
The publication names 44 institutions this year – 22 public and 22 private – as “Best Buys,” categorized as inexpensive or moderately priced with a four- or five-star academic rating. Geneseo has been consistently named to the list for several years.
Among other public colleges on the list are the University of Edinburgh and University of St. Andrews in the U.K.; the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill and Asheville); Purdue University; University of Texas at Austin; and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Among private colleges on the list are Baylor University, Rice University and the California Institute of Technology.
The guide is authored by former New York Times education editor Edward Fiske, who launched the guide in 1980 when he sensed that college-bound students and their families needed better information on which to base their educational choices. Not only does the guide have an “Index by Price” that groups public and private institutions into four price categories, from inexpensive to very expensive, but also suggests a number of schools that offer outstanding academics and high quality student life programs with relatively moderate prices.
The guide accepts no consulting, advertising or other fees from colleges and has no outside relationship with colleges working on its behalf. The goal of the publication is to help future students select the best colleges to reach their own goals in a price range that is manageable for their personal circumstances.
