Geneseo a ‘Top Public College’ and ‘Best Undergraduate Teaching’ Institution in U.S. News & World Report Rankings

GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo is second on U.S. News & World Report's "Top Public Schools" rankings and tied for second on the "Best Undergraduate Teaching" list among north region universities in its just-published 2014 Best Colleges guidebook. The college also is 15th in the general rankings for north region universities.

U.S. News defines a regional university as one that offers a full range of majors and master's programs but few, if any, doctoral programs.

"Undergraduate teaching is Geneseo's hallmark so it's really no surprise to see the college ranked so highly in the teaching category and that is a major factor in our top public school ranking," said Carol Long, Geneseo provost. "SUNY student surveys indicate that 92 percent of our recent grads would definitely or probably attend Geneseo again. The superb teaching of our faculty largely accounts for that overwhelming response."

The "Best Undergraduate Teaching" colleges in the country were selected from data collected from administrators at peer institutions within their region who identified schools where the faculty demonstrated an unusually strong commitment to undergraduate teaching. The "Top Public Colleges" list was generated from a variety of comparative indicators of academic excellence.

In the general north region university rankings, Geneseo was one of three public colleges ranked in the top 20.

"As we continue to work with Gov. Cuomo to position SUNY and New York to lead in affordability, access and quality, and President Obama puts these issues into focus nationally, we are proud to be recognized and ranked favorably by U.S. News & World Report," said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. "Congratulations to Geneseo and the many campuses representing SUNY on this list."

All of this year's rankings are available online and will be published in the 2014 edition of the Best Colleges guidebook.
