Geneseo Wind and Jazz Ensembles Set for Oct. 29 Performances

GENESEO, N.Y. - The Geneseo Wind Ensemble and Thursday Night Jazz Ensemble will open their fall season with a joint concert Oct. 29 at 8 p.m. in the college's Wadsworth Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public.

The Wind Ensemble, conducted by James Walker, distinguished service professor of music, will feature music of "Symphonic Proportions." Black Granite Symphonic March by James Hosey begins the program followed by Russian composer Vasily Kallinikov's Finale to his Symphony No. I in G. Netherlands composer Johan DeMeij will be featured in the first movement of his Symphony No. 1 "Lord of the Rings - Gandolf and Shadowfax." The Wind Ensemble concludes with a performance of the Symphonic Dance No. 3, "Fiesta," by American composer Clifton Williams.

Hosey's Black Granite Symphonic March has unusual significance in that it was written as a memorial to the those in the armed forces who died in the Vietnam War. It refers to the granite Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C.

The Kallinikov Finale is "utterly Russian in concept and style - huge proportions with Russian folk-like melodies as basic material," says Walker. "It's a bit pompous, but utterly accessible to the listener."

Walker also calls DeMeij's first movement of his Symphony No. 1"Lord of the Rings," program music at its best. "One can almost feel the speed and strength of Gandolf's steed Shadowfax, as it flies over the terrain of Middle Earth," says Walker.

"Fiesta" by Williams "is just that," says Walker. "It's a feast of Mexican musical gestures, a pastiche of street bands, bull-fight calls and dances performed amidst throngs of celebrating crowds. It's a fun piece to play and listen to."

The Monday Night Jazz Ensemble will feature music in the "Big Band Style" with works by some of America's top jazz ensemble composers.
