GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo students will participate in a daylong campus celebration April 8 by showcasing their research accomplishments and creative talents during the college’s eighth annual GREAT Day – Geneseo Recognizing Excellence, Achievement & Talent. About 800 students from all disciplines will share their work with visitors through presentations, exhibits and performances, and Pulitzer Prize winning author Sheri Fink will deliver the keynote address. The lecture and all GREAT Day events are free and open to the public.

“Much of what Geneseo represents comes together on GREAT Day,” said Carol S. Long, interim Geneseo president. “Faculty collaboration with students, creative thinking and performing, and plain hard work result in a full day of well-deserved recognition for our students, many of whom have dedicated several semesters to their projects. I look forward to GREAT Day every year.”

Fink will deliver the Jack and Carol Kramer Endowed Lectureship at 1 p.m. in Wadsworth Auditorium. Her most recent book, “Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital,” investigates the deadly choices faced in a New Orleans hospital during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. It was named a New York Times Top 10 Book for 2013.

Months after Katrina, several health professionals faced criminal allegations that they deliberately injected numerous patients with drugs to hasten their deaths. The book poses reverberating questions about end-of-life care, race discrimination in medicine and how individuals and institutions break down during disasters.

Fink’s Pulitzer Prize was for investigative reporting. She also has won the National Magazine Award and the Overseas Press Club Lowell Thomas Award, among other journalism prizes. She received her M.D. and Ph.D. from Stanford University and is a former relief worker in disaster and conflict zones.

In addition to endowing the GREAT Day Lecture series, Jack and Carol Kramer, both 1976 Geneseo graduates, have provided major support for other Geneseo programs, including The Carol Kramer Endowed Scholarship for Excellence in Psychology and The Jack Kramer Endowed Scholarship for Excellence in Physics.

No classes are scheduled at Geneseo April 8 to accommodate GREAT Day events.
