GENESEO, N.Y. -- Identical twins Matthew and Michael Siegenthaler aren't stopping after they receive their undergraduate degrees from SUNY Geneseo May 14. Both will start medical school in August at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, not far from their home town of Verona, N.Y.

"The rigorous academic program here at Geneseo - especially in biochemistry - prepared us both for medical school entrance," said Michael. "We had an interest in medicine from the beginning but it has really strongly evolved during our Geneseo studies."

Matthew and Michael both point to their undergraduate research experiences and involvement in the First Response emergency medical service program on campus as two keys to their success.

"Being able to do significant laboratory research at Geneseo was a great opportunity," says Matthew, "and getting EMT certification through the First Response program was very beneficial. Both experiences made us more competitive when we applied for medical school."

Wendy Pogozelski, professor of chemistry at Geneseo, had the twins in class and supervised them in her research lab.

"It was a true pleasure having both Matthew and Michael in class and assisting in my research lab," said Pogozelski. " I am elated they will both will be attending medical school. They are both highly talented academically and fine young men. I have no doubt they will have successful careers in medicine."

The twins are both biochemistry majors and have exhibited stellar academic performances during their four years at Geneseo. Both have been on either the president's or dean's list every semester; they were two of 14 Presidential Scholars, an honor awarded to top-achieving members of the incoming senior class who exemplify Geneseo's institutional values; and both were elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Michael was in the college's honors program as an Edgar Fellow and Matthew was president of Geneseo chapter of the Golden Key International Honour Society.

It seems the twins' experience at Geneseo rubbed off on another family member. Their brother, Kevin, is a junior at the college -- and also a biochemistry major.
