Jennifer L. Pozner to speak at Distinguished Speaker Series, October 17th

GENESEO, NY - As part of the All College Hour Distinguished Speaker Series, Jennifer L. Pozner will be lecturing in the MacVittie College Union Ballroom on October 17th at 2:30pm. She will be discussing "Project Brainwash: Why Reality TV is Bad for Women (…and Men, People of Color, The Economy, Love, Sex and Sheer Common Sense!)"

Jennifer L. Pozner is founder and executive director of Women In Media & News (WIMN), a media justice group that amplifies women’s presence and power in the public debate through media analysis, education and advocacy. She is also managing editor of WIMN's Voices, the popular group blog on women and the media, which can be found at WIMNonline.org.
A widely published freelance journalist, her work has appeared in outlets ranging from corporate newspapers such as Newsday, Chicago Tribune and Boston Phoenix, to independent magazines such as Ms. magazine, The American Prospect, In These Times and Bitch: Feminist Response to Pop Culture, as well as new media like AlterNet.org, Salon.com and the HuffingtonPost, and numerous anthologies.
Pozner has spoken on women, media, politics and pop culture at more than seventy colleges across the country. In 2009, she was named one of the New Leaders Council 40 Under Forty young progressive leaders to watch, and received the Soroptimist International of NYC “Making A Difference for Women” Award in 2007. But she’s proudest of the “certificate of hotness” she received in 2006 from “The Real Hot 100,” a Girls In Government project honoring young women leaders making change in their communities – because, as the organization affirmed: Smart Is Hot!

Pozner has also appeared as a commentator on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, ABC News Now, Democracy Now!, National Public Radio, Comedy Central's “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” and several documentary films. And, because she's a sucker for punishment, she's gone head to head with some of the most blustery boys of cable news, including Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity and Joe Scarborough.

The remaining speakers in the Distinguished Speaker Series are:

• Nov. 7 -- World-recognized speaker on global business and policy John Manzella will address "Global Economic Myths and Realities and Their Impact on Policy and Business."
• Dec. 5 -- Geneseo alumnus Larry Rothchild, a non-profit business development manager in New York City, will join his partner, James Patrick, an acupuncturist and massage therapist, for "What's the Rush? A Frank Discussion of the Reality of Gay Relationships AFTER the Legalizing of Same-Sex Marriage."

All lectures are held in the MacVittie College Union Ballroom at 2:30pm.

The All-College Hour Distinguished Speaker Series is sponsored by the college's Divisions of Student and Campus Life and Academic Affairs.
