These items by Avon, N.Y., potter Mike Carroll are part of the Lederer Gallery's "Potters of Livingston County" exhibition through Oct. 15.

GENESEO, N.Y. - An exhibition of the most significant clay objects being produced in Livingston County is currently on display at SUNY Geneseo's Lederer Gallery in Brodie Hall.

Curated by Geneseo Ceramics Professor Carl Shanahan, The "Potters of Livington County Past and Present" exhibition runs through Oct. 15. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Potters represented in the exhibition include Shanahan; Kevin Raymond from Nunda; Mike Carroll from Avon; Kala Stein from Springwater; Mark Peace from Geneseo; Trisha Koomen from Avon; Sharon Leary from Geneseo; Carol Nickol from Nunda; Jan Jacque from Conesus; and Robin Whiteman from Springwater.

The first pottery in Livingston County was established in Avon in the early 1800s. The early potters of the county created a wide range of functional items needed by the settlers of the county. As mass production and industrialism spread, the need for handmade pottery was eliminated.

Little interest in pottery arose throughout the country until after the war years. The rekindled interest in pottery for the most part was not in production of functional ware but in the exploration of clay as an art media.
