About us

history

Our brotherhood began in the fall of 1956 when a group of GI's on campus decided to bind together and start a club for veterans. This group developed into an athletic club, and a tight group of friends.

During the fall of 1957, the original members applied to the Inter Fraternity Council for a charter and were rejected. The IFC decided that it didn't want to lower their standards to allow the admittance of the Order of Prometheus into their organization.

However, rejection by the IFC did not affect the spirit of the group. That spring they demonstrated their athletic ability and in the fall went on to win the Homecoming trophy.

In February of 1958, still functioning as a social organization, the group formed the third major political group on campus, and effectively enhanced their position by winning the election by a landslide. With this newly acquired power, the group felt that they were now in a better position to apply for membership in the IFC. In 1958, the IFC granted membership. After a 20 week probationary period, the Order of Prometheus was recognized as a fraternity by the college. In the spring of 1959, the Greek letters Theta Omega Phi, the official pin, and the jacket were adopted.

For over 20 years this local fraternity excelled on campus. Then in 1981 a decision was made to become a national chapter of the Phi Kappa Sigma National Fraternity. The Beta Phi chapter remained so for 10 years. In 1991, we dropped our National Charter in favor of returning to our local heritage. What emerged was Phi Kappa Chi, the Order of Prometheus.
Our colors are black and gold and our nickname is Phi Kaps. Today we excel as a local Fraternity on the SUNY Geneseo Campus. We are a very strong brotherhood consisting currently of 19 members. We pride ourselves on our tight brotherhood and our great diversity.
