Introduction

SUNY Geneseo, a highly regarded liberal arts college in the State University of New York (SUNY) system, seeks an inspiring, visionary and entrepreneurial leader to become its next president. Founded in 1871, Geneseo has developed into one of the nation’s most selective public liberal arts institutions and is nationally recognized as a center of excellence in undergraduate education. Geneseo is committed to providing life-enhancing, residential education of the “whole person” on an idyllic campus where young people learn to define themselves intellectually, personally and socially.

 

Located 30 minutes south of Rochester, NY, in a historic village, Geneseo enrolls 5,300-5,400 undergraduate and graduate students who are distinguished by impressive academic backgrounds, a commitment to service, and their accomplishments after graduation. Within one year of graduating, nearly 40 percent of Geneseo students enter graduate or professional school. Geneseo is ranked in the top 10 nationwide for the percentage of its graduates who receive PhDs in the STEM fields. Others become leaders in business, public service, non-profit enterprise and the arts.


The College consists of 18 academic departments as well as two professional schools: the School of Business, and the Ella Cline Shear School of Education. Together these programs offer a total of 43 undergraduate majors, 21 interdisciplinary minors, and six master’s programs in Education and Accounting.

 

The president will build upon Geneseo’s distinguished history and unite the College around common goals for its future, preserving its strengths while finding solutions for the challenges facing public higher education and small liberal arts colleges nationwide. S/he will be a dynamic, experienced and strategic leader who will leverage the strong sense of institutional pride and entrepreneurial spirit that exists among students, faculty, staff, alumni and the community. As the chief ambassador for Geneseo, the president will advocate for the benefits of a Geneseo liberal arts education and strengthen relationships with alumni, the community, partner educational institutions, businesses, government and nonprofit organizations around the world. The president will provide strong and transparent leadership in growing and managing the College’s financial resources.

GENESEO HISTORY AND CONTEXT

Founded in 1871 as a normal school for teachers, Geneseo has blended the rich traditions of its past with new initiatives to become the most selective institution in the State University of New York system and one of the most selective public liberal arts colleges in the country.

 

Since SUNY’s creation in 1948, Geneseo has evolved into one of the premier public liberal arts colleges in the country, earning national acclaim for its academic quality and value. A long-standing member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC), Geneseo combines liberal arts with selected professional and master's level programs resulting in a rigorous curriculum, transformational learning experiences and a rich co-curricular life. The entire college community works together to develop socially responsible citizens with skills and values important to the pursuit of an enriched life and success in the world.

 

In 2012, U.S. News and World Report ranked Geneseo as the top “Up and Coming” and “Best Undergraduate Teaching” regional university in the north. Since 1998, the publication has rated the College first or second among public universities in the north every year. The New York Times calls Geneseo, “one of the nation’s most selective, highly regarded public colleges,” a “hidden gem” that is “increasingly seen as a first choice for high achievers.” In its 2012-13 college rankings, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance placed Geneseo first in the nation as a best-value college for out-of-state students and ninth for in-state students on its list of the nation’s top 100 public colleges. Geneseo is also listed in the Fiske Guide to Colleges as a “Best Buy” school, and is lauded for its academic programs, accessible professors, strong residential life experience, and location in the supportive community of Geneseo.
