It is difficult for most of us to comprehend the suffering caused by the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti Jan. 12. It appears the quake has caused widespread death and destruction in a country already fragile from high levels of poverty and hardship caused by other natural disasters. The people of Haiti and their families, friends and colleagues all over the world are in the thoughts and prayers of the entire Geneseo community. Our College community includes Haitian faculty, staff, students, and alumni who are personally affected by the tragedy.
To help with the Haiti relief efforts, the college is partnering with a local humanitarian organization, Livingston CARES, which focuses on disaster relief and recovery efforts around the globe. Livingston CARES has established a Haiti Relief Fund to assist the people suffering the effects of the earthquake. The fund will be administered in collaboration with Professor Rosemarie Chierici, chair of Geneseo's anthropology department and a native of Haiti, who has been developing - with assistance from our students, alumni, and many Rochester/Geneseo community members - a comprehensive health care system in one of the most impoverished regions of that country. Professor Chierici will help direct donations to organizations that give the most effective support to earthquake survivors.
Donations to the Haiti Relief Fund may be made with full confidence on the Livingston CARES Web site. You can contribute to the relief effort on the "make a donation" page using one of two options: (1) write a check payable to Livingston CARES Haiti Relief Fund, or (2) use the "Network for Good" credit card option which allows you to note that the donation is for the Haiti Relief Fund.
We often feel helpless when the world community experiences these unimaginable natural disasters, but financial support is one way we all can help. Livingston CARES is an effective and secure way of providing that support and I encourage you to participate. Questions regarding Livingston CARES may be directed to Tom Matthews in Geneseo's Center for Community at email@example.com or 585-245-5857. Thank you.
