GENESEO, N.Y. -- Four SUNY Geneseo athletes are among winners of 2009-10 Chancellor's Scholar Athlete Awards. SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher honored the students May 3 along with 71 others from across the system. Fifteen of the winners are from Geneseo's athletic conference, Division III SUNYAC.
Students honored from Geneseo were Liz Montgomery (cross country) from Glenville, N.Y.; Joey Mort (soccer) from Rochester, N.Y.; Jeff Singer (swimming and diving) from Queensbury, N.Y.; and Kristin Shumway (track and field) from Potsdam, N.Y.
"As we approach the end of the academic year, I have the pleasure of honoring many SUNY students and faculty for their hard-earned achievements," said Chancellor Zimpher. "The SUNY scholar athletes' accomplishments are indeed impressive, as they have excelled in our classrooms and in our athletic programs. With an average GPA of 3.63 and a number of championship competitions among them, this year's scholar athlete awardees are to be commended."
The award recognizes a combination of academic excellence and outstanding athletic achievement at the Division I, Division III and NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) levels. Scholar athletes are selected by system administration in consultation with the campus athletic directors at each level of play.
