GENESEO, N.Y. -- Katie Roberts, a junior from Penfield, N.Y., became the first Geneseo equestrian team rider to place in a national equestrian championship event this past weekend. She also is the first from the college ever to qualify for the national championships.
Roberts placed third in the nation in the individual hunt seat open equitation event at the 2010 Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (ISHA) National Championships at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.
College equestrian is Geneseo's newest varsity sport. Since 2004, athletes have competed against other colleges and universities, including Division I schools. The team is led by Coach Kim Sanford, owner and trainer at Leg Up Stables in Geneseo. She manages the 300-acre farm which is home to approximately 70 horses and will continue to serve as the host site for SUNY Geneseo's Equestrian team.
