GENESEO, N.Y. - The development of successful small businesses in Livingston and Wyoming Counties is alive and well, according to statistics from the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at SUNY Geneseo.
In the previous nine calendar quarters, SBDC in Geneseo assisted more than 350 people who needed help with their businesses, either to get them up and running or to improve their existing operations.
Forty-four of those people reported that the SBDC helped them create 134 new jobs and were able to save or retain another 30. They also reported investing nearly $3.6 million from all funding sources in the process, with more than $1 million of that investment coming from banks and other commercial lenders.
Richard Barth, director of the local SBDC, said these results are not record numbers for the Geneseo Center but do indicate that interest in small businesses remains strong in spite of a very difficult lending environment and a difficult startup market.
"Our clients usually come to us with a business dream, but little to no business experience," said Barth. "We help them understand what it's going to take to make the dream a reality, and what's going to be demanded of them once they open their doors. Many of them need financing from a commercial lender who will require a complete business plan," he said.
Barth says the SBDC helps clients get a realistic plan in place and find financing to get the business off the ground. While lenders have been very conservative over the last 2 years, he says they are still showing support for business ideas that are well thought out and well planned.
Since 1993 the SUNY Geneseo SBDC has provided free help primarily for business startups in Livingston, Wyoming and Monroe Counties. Nearly 3,000 people have received assistance, resulting in 1,565 new jobs and another 320 retained by existing companies. More than $165 million has been invested in the local economy by the center's clients.
