GENESEO, N.Y. - The State University of New York Board of Trustees has awarded two SUNY Geneseo faculty members with distinguished professorships. Kurt Fletcher, professor and chair of SUNY Geneseo's physics and astronomy department, has been named a distinguished teaching professor, and Dennis Showers, professor of education, a distinguished service professor. The distinguished rank constitutes the highest system tribute conferred upon instructional faculty at state-operated campuses.
Fletcher and Showers are among 25 SUNY faculty named this year to distinguished ranks. They are among 42 Geneseo faculty members who have received the rank since 1973.
"SUNY has now conferred its highest faculty honor upon more than 880 current and retired professors from across the system," said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. "In so doing, we proudly recognize the extraordinary achievements of our teachers, scholars and mentors, all of whom serve as stellar examples of SUNY's commitment to excellence."
The board said Fletcher "is an exceptional teacher who has profoundly shaped the lives and careers of scores of students," and noted his "ability to make the complexities of a notoriously difficult field accessible to a wide variety of students as one of his greatest gifts." The board also cited American Institute of Physics' recognition of the Geneseo physics and astronomy department as one of the strongest undergraduate programs in the country.
The board said Showers "has provided exceptional service to Geneseo, to the SUNY system, to the field of teacher education and to national and international voluntary organizations related to science and math." The board also praised Showers' important contributions in support of shared governance at the college and system levels and noted his generous service to his profession and colleagues by training with two accrediting agencies for teacher education programs, performing site visits and offering assistance to SUNY campuses preparing for accreditation reviews.
Also receiving a distinguished teaching professorship this year is a 1981 Geneseo alumnus, John Wadach, chair of physics and engineering at Monroe Community College in Rochester, N.Y.
"It is with great pride that we recognize the brilliant scholars and teachers whose service merits one of the SUNY distinguished ranks," said Board Chairman Carl T. Hayden.
