GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo Greek community has received the Amy Vojta Impact Award in the risk reduction category from the Northeast Greek Leadership Association (NGLA). The award, one of two presented from 14 applicants in the risk reduction category, commends the program "Geneseo U-Knighting for Change," a week of programs last fall dedicated to change, featuring guest speakers, interactive activities and other events.
The organization presents the awards to chapters, councils or campuses whose programming or initiatives have demonstrated a substantive impact on their campus or community.
The creators of the initiative, Meghan Lijewski from Sigma Delta Tau, a senior from Canandaigua, N.Y.; Julia McDaniel from Alpha Kappa Phi, a senior from Clinton, N.Y.; and Jill Scalzo from Phi Kappa Pi, a senior from Selkirk, N.Y., received the award during the association's conference in Hartford, Conn. They also presented a workshop during the event, titled "Leading Change on Your Campus: How We Did It."
"I am so thrilled that the association recognized these students for their vision and tenacity, and the impact their idea had on our community," said Wendi Kinney, Geneseo's coordinator of Greek affairs and off-campus living. "These women put their fraternal values into action and worked tirelessly for more than nine months to plan and implement the program. It was rewarding to me, as advisor, to see these women recognize the important role that fraternities and sororities can, and should, play in creating a culture that fosters the responsible use of alcohol, and their desire to share this perspective with their peers."
The NGLA's mission is to build community among students from a variety of fraternal experiences, challenges members to align their actions with fraternal values and empowers advocates to transform and improve their communities.
