Kate Pitcher '94 has always believed Geneseo is a special place. "The college means a lot to me," she says.
On staff at Milne Library for 10 years, Pitcher assists the new generation of Geneseo students with research and projects as diverse as the thousands and thousands of books and other resources available. The same close social community and strong academics at the college are the same, says Pitcher. As an alumna and staff member, Pitchers has a lot of contact with students. They have inspired her to contribute to Shaping Lives of Purpose: The Campaign for Geneseo.
"There are a lot of exceptional students, and a lot of them work so hard to get here," says Pitcher. "It's nice to give back."
Pitcher is among 30 staff and librarians who play vital roles in making Milne what it has always been — a hub for knowledge, exploration and community on campus. Half of the staff have participated in the campaign, which is raising $22 million to strengthen Geneseo's endowment, and support academic innovation and faculty support, student scholarships, global education, The Fund for Geneseo and athletics.
"Every one of our staff members are really student focused," says Liz Argientieri, visiting assistant senior librarian and a faculty and staff leader for the campaign. She believes the staff want to support student efforts and to help the college do as much as possible.
Many initiatives and programs at Milne are only possible through gifts, say Argentieri and Cyril Oberlander, Milne Library director. Those include opportunities for staff education by bringing in speakers and presenters on topics such as trends in scholarly publishing, as well as training and training to advance the Digital Thoreau project. Other projects have included sound-proofing the media studio and hosting the library school alumni tea at Summer Reunion in 2011.
Shaping Lives of Purpose will help Milne continue to offer students the same quality of service, says Oberlander. Milne has been widely recognized for innovation and leadership, on the national level.
"Librarians are key to connecting people, ideas and resources," he says. "... Milne Library is alive and well, continually evolving to the needs of our students, faculty and staff — thanks to your support."
