Call to Order
Adoption of the Agenda: adopted
Approval of the Minutes of the Previous Meetings
p. 6-15, Senate Bulletin 1: approved
Senate Reports
President Christopher Dahl: Five items to report. 1. College has begun the search process for new provost. Many members of the College community met with search consultant Dr. Ted Marchese last week. Committee is preparing ad copy for posting in appropriate papers. There will also be a web page for the search, available to the college community. Grateful to people on the search committee: Liz Dance and Cindy McCafferty, the student reps; and R. Herzman (chair), B. Bonfiglio, S. Burwood, J. Zook, D. Marozas, M. Blood, W. Pogozelski. 2. President’s Taskforce on Faculty Roles, Rewards and Evaluations. This year will be chaired by Mary Ellen Zuckerman, co-chair Dave Geiger. Joseph Bulsys has also been appointed to commission. 3. Strategic planning group, appointed in consultation with Senate Executive Committee, will be working on 7th goal for physical facilities. Current membership of planning committee: C. Freeman, T. Bazzett, R. Hatheway, N Schiavetti, C. Faulkner, P. Schacht, E. Wallace, K Clark, J. Rogers, a student appointee to be determined by SA, and the three vice presidents and interim provost. T. Greenfield will be taking notes. Dahl is chair for this year, temporarily replacing Provost. 4. Budget: disappointing but not disastrous. Received $250,000 more than budget of 1 year ago, but doesn’t mean much b/c of contractual employee costs, which are $500,000-750,000. Haven’t allocated the 250K yet. College has restricted searches and expenditures to maintain curriculum and college. There is a limit to how much we can do that, but we are managing as well as we can. 5. Prof. Jeffrey Milem of University of Maryland College Park will be giving president’s first lecture on diversity Oct. 20, on positive educational outcomes of diversity. Hope to be annual tradition.
Provost David Gordon: Announcements: The taskforce on Faculty Roles and Rewards is in its 2nd year. This year they plan to involve campus community in discussion. Reps from task force will attend dept. meetings to talk to depts., then have cluster meetings to talk in larger groups. 2. American Democracy Project: joint endeavor of New York Times and Association of American State Colleges and Universities to promote student civic engagement. Last week had first discussion meeting with those interested to generate ideas. Another mtg. this Thursday, Sept. 18 in President’s conference room at 12:45. If interested please attend. Attendance will not commit you to further participation
Chair Charlie Freeman: Welcome new senators. Thank those who volunteered to be chairs of subcommittees. Thanks to C. Faulkner for being Senate secretary. Update on fall elections for Faculty Personnel Committee, Nominations Committee, and for University Faculty Senator. Thanks Ed Pogozelski for taking nominations, he needs corrections to nominations by Sept. 22 at noon. Senate web page: www.geneseo.edu/~senate. Web page has Senate bulletins archived, Constitution, awards, link to University Faculty Senate. Finally, please announce name and dept. when speaking on senate floor!

University Senator William Gohlman: Next meeting Oct 23-24 in Oswego. No agenda yet.
Central Council Liz Dance: Elections at end of this month for first year students and student rep to college council. Elections will be on-line. No referendum this year. Looking into participating in immigrant workers’ freedom ride. If any one knows of possible sources of funding for this contact sasa@geneseo.edu

Motion to accept: so moved. Background: first reading approved at final mtg. of senate. Minor edits since then. Open floor for discussion:
President Dahl: entrusted with editing it over the summer. Tried to keep wording but to clarify, particularly 5th paragraph. Thanks to Ed Gillin and Paul Schacht for their suggestions. Thinks “vigorous exchange of ideas” makes more clear why diversity important to life of college. Diversity contributes to intellectual vitality of community.
