Admonition
As I prepare the Agenda for this month's Senate meeting, I cannot help but notice that many of the Senators are actually accomplishing something, thus making more work for the Chair. I would appreciate a little more cooperation from you all. So if you could all return to your important duties in teaching, research, service, taking classes, and doing the important administrative duties that you have been hired to do, and spend less time accomplishing stuff in Campus Governance, I would appreciate it.
I don't want to have to talk with you about this again...

First Reading:
The Undergraduate Academic Policies, Core, and Review Committee moves to delete the following item from the list of Requirements for Baccalaureate Degree Programs in the Geneseo Undergraduate Bulletin (Undergraduate Bulletin, p. 101):
9. Earn a minimum of 45 semester hours outside the general academic area of fine arts, humanities, natural sciences, or social sciences in which they are majoring. These academic areas are defined below. (Forty two semester hours outside the general academic area are required for students graduating with two majors in the same academic area.)
First Reading:
The Undergraduate Academic Policies, Core, and Review Committee moves to delete the following paragraph from the Repeat Course Policy in the Geneseo Undergraudate Bulletin (Undergraduate Bulletin, p. 90):
Seniors who receive a D or E in their final semester may petition the instructor(s) and the Dean of the College to retake the final examination. Petitions must be submitted in writing within ten days after the student receives his or her final grades or two weeks after final grades are mailed from the College, whichever comes first. Petitions are approved or denied by the Dean in consultation with the course instructor(s).
First Reading:
In response to the learning outcomes in U. S. history set forth in the SUNY Board of Trustees Resolution on General Education (1999), the Undergraduate Academic Policies, Core, and Review Committee makes the following proposals:
That Geneseo students shall fulfill the SUNY directives by taking one three-credit course from a published list of appropriate courses;
That at least some courses on this list shall also meet other core or graduation requirements;
That a U.S. History Committee be established with power to review, approve, and forward to the Undergraduate Committee on Curriculum courses submitted by academic departments for inclusion on the published list.

The Executive Committee brings the following resolution before the Senate for its consideration.
A Resolution of the College Senate of the State University of New York College at Geneseo Whereas
The long-standing academic tradition of faculty control of the curriculum has contributed to the excellence of higher education at Geneseo; and
Whereas
The Report of the Provost's Advisory Task Force on General Education, Spring/Summer 1999 includes a procedural guideline that states that the "Campuses are charged with devising distinctive and varied ways of achieving the goals of General Education in the spirit of and within the parameters defined by the Trustees' resolution" (emphasis supplied); and
Whereas
The Board of Trustees' Resolution 98-241 on General Education specifies that "1. The faculty of each institution will retain the responsibility for establishing the specific course requirements and content of a General Education curriculum reflective of the best practices in American higher education" (emphasis supplied); therefore, be it
Resolved
That the College Senate of the State University of New York College at Geneseo calls upon the University Provost to discontinue his practice of determining on a course-by-course, rather than programmatic basis the program of General Education required by Geneseo and other campuses of the SUNY system. Furthermore, be it
Resolved
That the College Senate of the State University of New York College at Geneseo calls upon the University Provost to adjust the membership of the Provost's Advisory Council on General Education in such a way that full-time teaching faculty constitute a majority of the body, and that a member of the full-time teaching faculty be a co-chair of the body.

Undergraduate Academic Policies, Core, and Review Committee--6 February 2001
Present: C. Filice, E. Gillin, B. Golhman, H. Hoops, S. Kirsh, J. Lerch, T. Macula, D. Metz, J. Mounts, J. Over, J. Pacella, C. Truglia
The meeting started with a discussion of the following resolution that was passed by the General Education Committee on 2/2/01:
"Resolved:
I. That SUNY Geneseo adopt a general education requirement in United States History.
Further Resolved:
II. That students shall fulfill this requirement by taking one three-credit course from a published list of courses that satisfy the learning outcomes in U. S. History set forth in the SUNY Board of Trustees Resolution on General Education.
III. That a U. S. History Requirement Committee be established with the powers to review, approve, and forward to the Undergraduate Committee on Curriculum courses submitted by academic departments for inclusion in the published list."
The ensuing discussion revolved around three questions.
1. Should Geneseo have a general education requirement in U.S. History?
2. How should Geneseo students satisfy the SUNY Board of Trustees U. S. History requirement?
3. Since the policies and procedures set forth in II and III above have already been put in action by the Dean's office and will continue regardless of any action taken by this committee, why are we even considering these parts for a vote? Why not just do nothing?
The committee's answer to question 1 was "No." The answer to question 2 was to essentially adopt II above with understanding that at least some courses on this list will also meet other core or graduation requirements. The committee response to question 3 is found in the motion below made by J.Over and seconded by D. Metz
Motion:
"In response to the learning outcomes in U. S. history set forth in the SUNY Board of Trustees Resolution on General Education (1999), the Undergraduate Academic Policies, Core, and Review Committee makes the following proposals:
That Geneseo students shall fulfill the SUNY directives by taking one three-credit course from a published list of appropriate courses;
That at least some courses on this list will also meet other core or graduation requirements;
That a U.S. History Committee be established with power to review, approve, and forward to the Undergraduate Committee on Curriculum courses submitted by academic departments for inclusion on the published list."
This motion passed 11-0.
