• Being the voice of the profession on human resource management issues.

• Continuing to monitor and update the body of knowledge and related competencies for the human resource profession.

• Guiding the development and direction of the human resource profession

To achieve the purposes of the Society there shall be no discrimination in individual memberships or chapter affiliation because of race, religion, sex, age, national origin, disability, or veteran's status.

Management of the affairs, business, and property of SHRM, as well as the long-range planning for the organization, is performed by the SHRM Board of Directors. Coordinating all SHRM services is the responsibility of the full-time president and CEO appointed by the Board, and of the staff at the national office located in Alexandria, Virginia.
