The course explores American and European responses to common social problems. Thematically organized around problems of poverty, unemployment, crime, education and health care, this course examines the historical difference between American social policy and the policy response of European Union member states. In addition to a broad overview of the variety of forms of European Welfare States, the impact of membership in the European Union on Irish social policy will be explored.
