prospective students: program costs

This page is designed to give a general overview of some of the costs associated with studying abroad through Geneseo.  The specific cost of each program will be listed on the program webpage.  Program costs will depend on what type of program you will be participating in and how long you will be abroad.

The basic expenses associated with studying abroad through Geneseo are:

Program Fees
Health Insurance
Tuition
Estimated Costs Payable to Others

Program Fee

The Program Fee represents the cost of the program beyond tuition.  What the program fee covers depends on the type of program you will be participating in:

Faculty-led Programs: For most summer, intersession, or humanities abroad programs, the program fee represents 'travel expenses'.  Travel expenses will vary by program, but in general may include:

  • international airfare to and from a major, east-coast metropolitan area airport (including Toronto)
  • accommodations, classroom, and teaching facilities abroad
  • scheduled course museum visits and excursions
  • some group meals.

The program fee for faculty-led programs will not include:

  • domestic travel to and from the airport (including Toronto)
  • all meals
  • any pre-departure or trip preparation expenses, including visas and vaccinations, unless otherwise specified
  • personal expenses.

For those summer and intersession programs that are listed as host-institution, airfare may not be included in the program fee.  Please see the Study Abroad Office to confirm whether or not airfare is included in the program fee.

A specific list of what is included in the program fee of the program for which you are applying will be given on the 'program costs' section of that program's webpage.  If you have any questions please email studyabroad@geneseo.edu or stop by the office.

All costs are subject to change.

Semester/Academic Year Programs: For semester programs, what is included in the program fee will vary by program.  In general, the program fee may include:

  • Tuition differential
  • Administrative Fee
  • Program excursions*
  • Room and board*

The program fee for semester programs will not include:

  • Airfare
  • Any pre-departure or program preparation expenses, including visas and vaccinations
  • Spending money
  • Any personal side-trips or excursions you may choose to take while abroad

*What is included in the program fee for semester programs varies by program more than for faculty-led programs.  For example, many semester program fees do not include excursions or room and board; instead, these things will be arranged separately between the student and the university abroad.  If the room and board are not included in the program fee they will be listed as 'Estimated Costs Payable to Others' on the program cost webpage.  A specific list of what is covered by the program fee of the program for which you are applying will be given on the program costs section of that program's webpage.  If you have any questions please email studyabroad@geneseo.edu or stop by the office.

All costs are subject to change.

The Program Fee will be paid to the Study Abroad Office.  At this point in time, we only accept cash, check, or money order; we do not accept credit cards.  Checks and money orders for Program Fees should be made payable to 'CAS Study Abroad'.

Health Insurance

SUNY mandates that all students have adequate health insurance coverage while travelling abroad on a SUNY sponsored program.  Students going on Geneseo sponsored programs are required to purchase SUNY sponsored medical insurance.  This insurance is provided by HTH Worldwide and MedEx Assistance Corporation.  The cost of insurance depends on the duration of your program.  Please see the program costs sections of the program's webpagae for the exact amounts.

For more specific information on what is defined as 'adequate health insurance coverage' for studying abroad, and for specifics on HTH Worldwide/MedEx coverage, please visit the 'Health and Safety Abroad' section of the 'Accepted Students' webpage.  You can also download the Student Handbook, which is available in pdf format on the 'Forms and Downloads' page of our website.

Health insurance costs are subject to change.

The Health Insurance payment will be paid to the Study Abroad Office.  At this point in time, we only accept cash, check, or money order; we do not accept credit cards.  Checks and money orders for Health Insurance should be made payable to 'SUNY Geneseo'.

Tuition

Tuition will either be per credit hour (for summer and intersession programs) or full-time (for semester and academic year programs).  For New York State residents, tuition is $220 per credit hour/$2635 per semester.  For out-of-state residents, tuition is $597 per credit hour/$7160 per semester.

Tuition is billed by, and payable to, the Student Accounts Office.  The tuition for a study abroad program will show up on your student account as normal, and can be paid via credit card online.  Students on study abroad programs will not be charged the undergraduate comprehensive fee.

Estimated Costs Payable to 'Others'

Estimated costs are those costs not included in the program fee, health insurance, or tuition, that are not paid to SUNY Geneseo or the Study Abroad Office.  In general, these costs may include:

  • pre-departure or trip preparation expenses
  • vaccinations
  • visas
  • international airfare (semester and host-instutition programs)
  • housing (semester programs)
  • meals
  • personal expenses

Estimated costs are subject to change.  Many estimated costs, such as personal expenses and meals, depend on personal spending habits and exchange rates.
