The Setting

The city of Siena is located in central Italy in the province of Tuscany.  Its medieval architecture and heritage have been kept beautifully intact over the past several centuries, making it the perfect setting to study Italy's history and culture.

Siena is built on three hills, full of steep, winding streets and is enclosed within the circle of its massive walls, some seven kilometers in length.  This exquisite hill town lies within easy reach of Florence (one hour), Rome (two and a half hours), and the Mediterranean Sea (one and a half hours).

Its unique landscape has inspired generations of painters.  Many of their works hang in the splendidPinacoteca Nazionale.  The magnificent Gothic cathedral in black and white marble contains, among other treasures, the Library of Pius II, the humanist pope, Eneo Silvio Piccolimini.  the Palazzo Comunale, Siena's city hall, displays an abundance of art that depicts the evolution of local municipal government as we know it.
